Clarus Partners is delighted to welcome one of the nation’s preeminent experts in unclaimed property to its leadership team. Sonia Walwyn joins the firm as a new partner bringing more than 30 years of experience, most recently as a Director with Duff & Phelps, LLC. As an industry veteran, Sonia will be instrumental in launching Clarus Partners’ new unclaimed property advisory and compliance practice. This new service line will include audit defense, voluntary disclosures, exposure analysis, annual compliance, and unclaimed property process improvement/development.
Sonia has been a frequent speaker on the subject of abandoned and unclaimed property for various industry groups including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Tax Executive Institute and the Unclaimed Property Professional Organization (UPPO), where she served as chairperson of the bylaws and ethics committees. She has also authored articles on the subject for industry journals such as the Journal of Accountancy.
Earlier in her career, Sonia served as Deputy Treasurer/Deputy General Counsel to the Pennsylvania State Treasurer with responsibility for audit and legal enforcement of Pennsylvania’s unclaimed property law. Sonia earned an LLM in Taxation from the Villanova School of Law, a J.D. from the Dickinson School of Law, holds a B.S. in accounting and is a CPA in both the states of Illinois and Pennsylvania.
Clarus Partners is pleased to announce the acquisition of Sales Tax Specialists of Texas (“STST”) based in Dallas, Texas. As part of the acquisition, Steve Hanebutt, CPA, will join the firm as a new partner. Steve brings more than 25 years of experience in the sales and use tax arena. Licensed in Texas, he spent 10 years in public accounting – split between Arthur Andersen and two large, local CPA firms – prior to starting his own sales tax consulting firm. He has a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and a Master of Science in Taxation from the University of Texas at Arlington.

The legacy accounting and consulting firm of Clarus Partners (Columbus, OH) and Blue & Co., (Carmel, IN) announced their merger, effective December 1, 2019. The combined firm will operate as Blue & Co., LLC. Barry Adelman, Michael Stevenson and Matthew Kaufman have joined Blue & Co. The combined staff now totals more than 450 professionals in 11 offices across 3 states.
Clarus Partners Advisors, LLC, originally the State and Local Tax arm of Clarus Partners will retain the Clarus name and logo. “We are pleased to be able to carry on the trusted name of Clarus,” said Managing Partner Jeff Mallory. The Clarus Partners brand and logo will be retained by Clarus Partners Advisors as Indirect Tax advisors. “Our business has grown tremendously since the establishment of Clarus Partners Advisors, LLC a year ago,” said Mallory. The Indirect Tax firm, headquartered in Columbus, OH, has branch offices in North Carolina, Idaho, and Illinois.
